This medication treats breast cancer (including those cases when other medications of this type don’t help)

Class

Non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor

Indication

• Cases of breast tumor (for women who have their menopause passed)
• Cases of post-surgical treatment when early breast cancer was removed (the treatment course is five years after the surgery was performed)

Mechanism of action

Arimidex works with its active ingredient – anastrozol – blocking the action of an enzyme responsible for producing oestrogen, a sex hormone. This hormone is necessary for growth of most types of breast cancer. Blocking oestrogen Arimidex blocks breast cancer progressing.

How to use

Arimidex is taken either with or without food once a day.

If you missed the dose

Missed dose is taken if it’s not the time for the next one. In this case don’t take the dose you’ve missed to avoid overdosing.

Things to avoid while taking Arimidex

• The patient is strongly recommended to avoid involving in activities which require extra attention (including driving or any other activity which need you to be alert). If it’s not possible be very attentive as Arimidex may influence your capability to react quick;
• Tamoxifen and an esterogen medication shouldn’t be mixed with Arimidex. For more detailed information as for medications list which don’t work well together with Arimidex consult a specialist.

Side effects

• problems with eyesight and speech;
• difficulty with balance;
• bad headache or weakness which can touch only one side of the body;
• stomach problems;
• dark urine;
• swelling in different parts of the body (hands, face, feet).

If any of these or other side effects appear contact your doctor as soon as possible and describe your symptoms.

Storage

This medication is kept in a cool and dry place at room temperature.
